About Our Academy

HFC in USL Academy and UPSL Academy

Houston FC was one of the founding members of USL Academy's inaugural season in 2021 and we have competed in each subsequent season. We find that USL Academy provides us with the opportunity to compete against top talent academies across Texas, including Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Laredo.

Houston FC joined UPSL Academy in the fall of 2024. We currently compete in the U18, U17, and U16 age groups.

About USL Academy

The USL Academy is a developmental initiative by the United Soccer League (USL) designed to bridge the gap between youth soccer and professional ranks. It serves as a talent pipeline offering young players the chance to compete at a high level and potentially progress to professional teams within the USL’s structure (USL Championship, League One, and League Two). The program focuses on providing exposure, professional-level training, and competitive match environments.

The key components of the USL Academy include the USL Academy League, a regional competition where academy teams from USL clubs compete, often structured to align with the professional season. The USL Academy Cup is a national tournament featuring top teams from across the country, providing an elite competition platform. The program also emphasizes a pathway to pro, aiming to create a clear route for young players to transition from youth setups to professional contracts. Additionally, the age structure primarily targets players under 20, with some competitions allowing U23 teams to foster more opportunities for growth and professional readiness.

The USL Academy emphasizes not only soccer development but also personal and professional growth, helping athletes prepare for careers both on and off the pitch.

About UPSL Academy

The UPSL Academy was launched in spring 2019 as part of the United Premier Soccer League's effort to provide a structured pathway from youth soccer to adult, semi-professional, and professional levels. This initiative complements the UPSL’s adult league structure, offering young players competitive opportunities and exposure through showcases and regional conferences. It supports the development of athletes, coaches, and clubs by promoting accessibility, affordability, and diversity within the sport.

UPSL regional conference regular season play will be confined to 6,7 or 8 games so as to contain the financial and time demands placed on players, coaches and parents, allowing a suitable balance between development practice and matches. Playoffs will follow for the top teams of the moment.
